Hand drilling competition at Tombstone Desert Donkey Dash

The Tombstone Desert Donkey Dash brings the Wild West to life with a full day of family-friendly fun.

As part of Tombstone’s legendary Ed Schieffelin Days, the fun doesn’t stop with the races — there’s plenty to enjoy all day long. You can try your hand at old-school skills like hand drilling, test your grit in mucking competitions, gallop your way through hobby horse races, and yes… even compete in the legendary poop pick-up contest. It’s silly, spirited, and guaranteed to bring out laughs from kids and grown-ups alike. Step back in time and soak up the fun as you cheer on the action and join in the good-natured showdown that’s equal parts grit, giggles, and good old-fashioned Tombstone spirit. Come for the donkeys, stay for the shenanigans — there’s fun for every cowpoke in the family.

Did you know?

This might be the most epic road trip you’ll ever take. As you journey down Highway 80 to the Tombstone Desert Donkey Dash, you'll be passing through or close to a string of storied towns—Benson, Tombstone & Bisbee—each about 25 minutes apart, each offering a fresh chapter in the tale of the American frontier.

First stop is Benson, a perfect mix of small-town charm and geological wonder. Tour the historic Benson Railroad Museum before heading underground at Kartchner Caverns State Park, where limestone formations tell their ancient tales.

Ride into Tombstone, where the spirit of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday still haunts the dusty streets. Catch a gunfight at the O.K. Corral, grab a whiskey or big beer at Big Nose Kate’s Saloon, and walk the same wooden sidewalks once trodden by legends and outlaws of the West.

Keep riding to Bisbee, a colorful mining town turned artist haven tucked into the Mule Mountains. Explore the Queen Mine Tour, browse one-of-a-kind galleries and vintage or take in the sweeping desert views from the Bisbee 1000 Stair Climb trail.

And if you have time for one stop, head to Douglas where Mexican and American heritage meet in a place of historic grandeur. Marvel at the marble-lined Gadsden Hotel, visit the Douglas-Williams House.

This isn’t just a road trip—it’s a ride through history, art, grit, and gold.
